Turning harm-reduction into an accessible digital experience for Young People

Cardiff App Developers partnered with Barod, a South and West Wales harm-reduction charity to design and build a mobile platform that helps young people manage and reduce substance use. Our mission was to build something engaging, non-judgmental, and genuinely useful.

PrimaryGoals

Anonymous Onboarding & Profile: Signup by nickname and age only. No personal data required, no barriers to entry. Editable settings and customisable themes to drive engagement.
Goal Tracking & Sobriety Timer: Users set goals to reduce or quit substances. Live tracking of time sober and money saved, with start, pause, resume, and restart controls.
Photo Diary & Mood Tracking: A–Z harm-reduction resource with detailed substance information and contextual warning prompts. Fully dynamic, updated via the admin panel without an app release.
Moderated Community Chat: Peer support environment with admin-controlled keyword filtering and automatic blocking of harmful content. Encourages safe, goal-focused discussion.

The app is publicly live on both the App Store and Google Play, free to download, no referral required.
The app directly serves people who aren't yet at the point of seeking formal help. It lowers the threshold: harm reduction tips, substance information, and a daily diary are all self-serve and private. That's early intervention at scale.
The webchat with trained staff runs 7 days a week through the app, meaning Barod's human support capacity is now accessible digitally, not just in-office. For a charity with fixed geographic coverage, that's a significant capability uplift.
Their site is explicit that the app was designed by young people, with young people in mind, which matters for adoption in that demographic. It's not a bolt-on digital tool; it was built around how the audience actually engages.
